Simple Steps To Teach Anti-Racism To Our Children

The death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States made the world rumble. Thousands of Americans took to the streets protesting racism.

Some parents, including myself, feel that children need to understand what racism is and how to prevent it. Even though my child is still a toddler, but I want to make sure that he is equal to his other friends. There is no difference, even though skin color is different, or identity is different.

I agree with Lukehart, one of the fourth-grade teachers in the state of Illinois who states that children need to understand George Floyd's case, why people protest, and understand what racism is.

1) Get to know what racism is

Wikipedia translates racism as an understanding that biological differences in the human race determine the cultural achievements of certain groups or individuals, then assume certain races have the right to regulate other races.

Certain groups are considered superior to other groups. Explain that this concept is completely untrue.

2) Humans are diverse

Genetic and geographical differences make a person look different from others. There are black, brown and white. There are black, blond, and others. Some are tall and short.

Say that the difference is beautiful. Like a garden inhabited by many colorful flowers.

3) But, we are all equal

All humans are the same. There is no one superior or inferior. A person may be taller and physically larger, but that does not mean that tall and big can take arbitrary actions towards others.

Elephants, even though they are large, must not act arbitrarily towards small ants. Small ants will be sad, and if angry ants can attack an elephant.

4) Introduce empathy early on

If we have advantages, then teach to help friends or people who are lacking. Teach our children to recognize the feelings of others.

5) Let them blend

Even though we have different skin color, hair type, or gender, we can still play together and study together. For toddlers, the world of play is the most fun world. Let them mingle with their diverse friends.

If the toddler is used to playing with a variety of friends. So when they grow up they will be better prepared to get along with a variety of backgrounds.

6) Pay attention to children's language

Children often play and joke using the name of ridicule. Often this mockery is based on a particular race, or the physical form of his friend. For example, "frizzy", "slanted", or "black", and others.

Father and mother need to pay attention, and convey that ridicule like that should not be used because it can hurt the feelings of others. ** MK
