Meaning of New Year 1 Muharram for Muslims
The Islamic New Year which is commemorated every 1st of Muharram certainly feels special for Muslims around the world.
If in general, people celebrate the new year based on the AD calendar, Islam commemorates the new year based on the Hijri calendar that has been implemented since the time of the Prophet Muhammad.
Quoting from the official NU website, Islam has 12 months in a year, four of which are the months that are most glorified by Allah SWT or which are often called haram months.
The four haram months are the months of Dzulqo'dah, Dzulhijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
In addition, the Islamic New Year also has a deep and special meaning for Muslims. Here are three meanings of the Islamic New Year.
1. The Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad
1 Muharram is also commemorated as a reminder of an important event when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated from Mecca to Medina which later gave birth to Islam. After the Prophet Muhammad SAW moved, Islam experienced rapid development and spread even more to Mecca and its surrounding areas.
Prophet Muhammad SAW decided to move after receiving revelations and orders from Allah to spread Islamic teachings to society.
2. Form of struggle of the Prophet and his friends
The Islamic New Year is also interpreted as a spirit of tireless struggle and despair in spreading Islam by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions.
Despite many challenges and obstacles, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions never gave up or were pessimistic. Even the Prophet Muhammad SAW moved to Medina to leave his place of birth, relatives, and his belongings just so that he could fulfill the orders and revelations given by Allah SWT.
3. Self-introspection
The turn of the Islamic New Year is also interpreted as a moment for self-reflection or muhasabah.
As time goes on and on, with the arrival of the Islamic New Year, it is hoped that Muslims will be more introspective, introspective and sincere for all actions and deeds that have been carried out for 12 months....
