Brief History of the 1st of Muharram or Hijriyah New Year
The great event of the Prophet Muhammad SAW's hijrah was finally used as a name on the Islamic calendar. Previously, in commemorating an event, Arab society did not use a calendar system. But what they use is the day and month system. This can also be proven from the birth of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in the year of the elephant where the Arab community did not use numbers when determining the year.
Uthman bin Affan, Ali bin Abi Talib and also the companions of the Prophet finally discussed in order to determine how the Islamic calendar system was. And of the many proposals, Ali bin Abi Talib's was agreed upon or elected. The contents are about the Islamic hijriyah calendar starting when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated. As a Muslim, it is appropriate to know the brief history of the 1st of Muharram. The hijriyah calendar is a calendar system that uses the moon's circulation as a reference.
Meaning of 1 Muharram for Muslims
The hijrah event carried out by the Prophet Muhammad SAW from Mecca to Medina is an important event in Islam. He also emigrated as a form of strategy in preaching. If you look at the meaning of hijrah itself, hijrah is a struggle to be able to leave everything bad for a good direction.
At present, the hijrah event is also interpreted as learning the value of goodness for oneself, for example, such as leaving bad deeds or habits and turning to habits or something better.
Muharram 1st or Hijriyah New Year is celebrated with various events. The suggestion is to read the year-end and early-year prayers. In addition, on this new year or at 1 Muharram, Muslims are ordered to stop or avoid wars, quarrels or disputes. When you do good deeds on the eve of the new hijriyah year, your reward will be multiplied.
Fasting and Practices on the 1st of Muharram
Fasting in commemorating the 1st of Muharram has the law of sunnah muthlaq. There are some days which are more important when you want to fast this Muharram. To get privileges and rewards from Allah SWT, here are some types of fasting that you can do. As:
1. The fast of Ashura
As a Muslim you will not be strange to hear about the Ashura fast. This fast is done on the 10th of Muharram. Many Muslims are aware of this type of fast with the benefits it can have. One of its virtues is being able to wash away sins a year ago and also a year to come. This is in accordance with a hadith narrated by Muslims.
2. Fasting Tasu'ah
Unlike the Ashura fast, the Tasu'ah fast can be done beforehand on the 9th of Muharram. This fasting was done in order to get rid of the Jews who were fasting on the 10th of Muharram. How to do the fasting of Ashura and Tasu'ah is the same as fasting in general. It's just different from the intention.
3. Self-introspection or Muhasabah
Obtaining Allah's reward is not only by fasting in the month of Muharram. However, you can do self-introspection. This aims to correct any actions that have been committed in the past year. With the hope that when someone remembers the badness or sin that has been committed, he can immediately repent or ask Allah's forgiveness.
4. Read Surah Yasin
After maghrib has entered on the 1st of Muharram, you can continue reading Yasin's letter. Read it three times and it must be finished before entering the evening prayer time. If you cannot complete it three times then you should replace it by reading as many istighfar as possible.
When you have finished the first Yasin letter, continue by reading the prayer whose content is to ask for the determination of the Islamic faith. When you finish reading the second Yasin, you can continue to pray for forgiveness for sins in this world and in the hereafter. Pray for parents too.
After reading the third Yasin letter, continue by reading the prayer asking for a long life with blessings and can be useful for others. Pray for an abundance of good and lawful sustenance and ask him to die with khusnul khotimah.
5. Give Husbands Special Treatment
As a wife, giving good and special treatment to her husband is certainly worth rewarding. Especially if you enter on the 1st of Muharram, give the best treatment to your husband. Because on the 1st to 10th of Muharram, if a wife makes her husband privileged then she is included as Ahlul Jannah. Even though it should be, being a good wife is okay to do throughout life.
6. Pilgrimage to the Grave
Visiting the graves of the religious scholars or visiting their homes is also a practice that can be done. In Indonesia, this practice is mostly carried out by Muslims. Pilgrimage to the graves to the graves of the saints as well as to visit the scholars gives special blessings to those who do it.
7. Giving Care to Orphans
Starting from the 1st of Muharram to the 10th of Muharram, you can give compensation to the orphan by rubbing his head. This method is a form of affection for them, glorifying them with various sustenance together. Moreover, the prayers of the orphans are so special that they set aside sustenance so they can support the orphans in this month of Muharram.
As previously mentioned that on the 1st of Muharram, all forms of conflict should be avoided. Moreover, if someone wants to get the reward and virtue of the month of Muharram, make peace with those who have fought. Resolve disputes, fights in a peaceful or harmonious manner.
There are many privileges from the 1st of Muharram that you can get. You can start by reading the year-end prayer after Asr prayer and the year-end prayer read after doing maghrib prayer. Also do the Asuro fast and the Tasu'ah fast and other practices that add to your reward.
