The Rule of Eating While Standing

The scholars differed regarding the issue of eating while standing. Some scholars prohibit such practices based on the hadith narrated by Muslim following: 

عن أنس عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه نهى أن يشرب الرجل قائما قال قتادة فقلنا فالأكل فقال ذاك أشر أو أخبث

The Rule of Eating While Standing

That is, "From a friend of Anas RA, of the Prophet Muhammad that he forbid someone to drink while standing. Qatada said. We asked, "How about eating?" The Prophet replied, "It is worse or more vicious," "(Muslim). Meanwhile, some scholars allow the practice of eating while standing. This scholar stated that the practice of eating while standing was not forbidden. They based their views on the following hadith narrated by At-Tirmidzi and Ibn Majah: 

عن ابن عمر قال كنا نأكل على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ونحن نمشي ونمن 

'We are, the time of the Prophet while walking. We drink while standing, "" (Narrated by At-Tirmidzi and Ibn Majah). ADVERTISEMENT Imam An-Nawawi is one of the scholars who allows eating while standing. He interprets the prohibition of eating while standing in the hadith of Imam Muslim's history as a practice that violates virtue (khilaful afdhal or khilaful hall), not a prohibition on makruh let alone haram. 

 وأما الأكل فإن كان لحاجة فجائز وإن كان لغير حاجة فهو خلاف الأفضل ولا يقال إنه مكروه وثبت في صحيح البخاري من رواية ابن عمر رضي الله تعالى عنه أنهم كانوا يفعلونه وهذا مقدم على ما في صحيح مسلم عن أنس أنه كرهه

 means, "As for the meal ( while standing), if it is done because of an urge, then it is permissible. But if there is no desire at all, then that action violates the main thing and is not called makruh. It has remained with Sahih Bukhari (maybe he means At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah-pent.) From the history of the companions of Ibn Umar RA that the companions of the prophet did it (eating while standing). This history takes precedence over the narration in Sahih Muslim from the friend of Anas RA that he declared makruh, "(Imam An-Nawawi, Fatawal Imam An-Nawawi, [Beirut, Darul Kutub Al-Ilmiyyah: 2018 M / 1439 H], page 73). However, to accommodate these two propositions, eating should be done sitting down as a recommended practice because it is closer to virtue, oblivion, or the hall.
