Survey Results Analysis: US Muslims Least Likely to Vote for Trump

A new poll shows American Muslims are the most likely religious group to support President Donald Trump in the US presidential election (pilpres) on November 3, 2020. The survey was conducted by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding during the spring and released on Thursday (1/10).

Survey Results Analysis: US Muslims Least Likely to Vote for Trump

In the survey, support from Muslim Americans for Trump was lower than the other candidates. Only 14 percent of US Muslims support Trump's re-run for president. Meanwhile, American Jews are in second place with 27 percent, Catholics 34 percent, Protestants 39 percent, and Evangelicals with 61 percent.

However, among those 14 percent of US Muslims there is a 10 percent increase in support provided for Trump's candidacy. Trump's blessing among minority groups is up to 30 percent.

Nevertheless, the polls were conducted in March and April, before the US economy bottomed out due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to the poll, Trump's jump in support from four to 14 percent came mostly from white Muslims. Meanwhile 31 percent support the president for economic reasons.

Among black and Arab Muslims, support for Trump has dropped to eight percent. Muslim Americans generally support Democratic candidates.

Former candidate Bernie Sanders received 29 percent of support. The newest candidate Joe Biden received 22 percent of the vote when the vote took place in the primaries.

The survey said that around 51 percent of US Muslims supported a Democratic candidate, compared with 16 percent supporting a Republican. As a candidate, Trump is pushing the issue of a Muslim ban. While serving as president, he signed executive orders restricting immigration from some Muslim-majority countries for national security reasons.

Meanwhile, the poll also showed Muslims were more likely to express satisfaction with direction from the US than the general public. The survey revealed that Muslim voter registration had increased since 2016 and now stands at 78 percent.

The segment of Muslim voters who intend to vote but have not registered has fallen from 21 percent in 2016 to three percent in 2020. One of the authors of the poll and a research project run at ISPU, Erum Ikramullah, said she expects more US Muslim voters in selection later.

"Given that Muslim voter registration continues to increase and the gap between intention to vote and behavior has decreased significantly, we estimate that the majority of Muslims who have the right to vote commit to vote in the presidential election," Ikramullah told The National. .

He said American Muslims were more involved in US politics than most people in the country. They found that Muslim political involvement outside of voting exceeds or equals to the general public.

"So we can expect Muslims to remain involved in political activities no matter what the election results are," Ikramullah said.

According to the Pew Research Center, the US is home to more than 3.4 million Muslims. Many of them live in major battleground states such as Michigan and Florida. The state's Muslim community can play a decisive role when America holds a vote on November 3, 2020.
