Fasting When Traveling Abroad
The time difference between 2 different places is certainly inevitable. Let alone between countries, in one country Indonesia alone there are 3 general time differences, namely West Indonesia Time (WIB), Central Indonesia Time (WITA), and Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT). There is a 1 hour time difference between WIB and WITA or WITA and WIT, and a 2 hour time difference between WIB and WIT.

During this time in ordinary days the time difference may not make you confused. However, how to address this difference when it comes to imsakiyah schedules, including prayer times when we travel to places that have a time difference from the area of origin?

Thanks to technology, everything has become easier. Not to be confused, you just have to download several choices of Islamic applications that will show the prayer schedule, including evening prayers which is a sign of the arrival of breaking the fast.

The next question, what if you do the meal and break the fast in 2 places that have a time difference? For example, you take a meal in Jakarta, then you have to go to Melbourne, Australia. The time in Melbourne is 4 hours earlier than Jakarta, so if you calculate the length of time you fast, then your fasting time is shorter because you break the fast with time in Melbourne.

Conversely, even if you travel abroad that time to withdraw from WIB, then you must be patient to undergo fasting time longer than in the homeland. This is based on the words of the Prophet who said, "When the night has come from that direction and the day has gone from that direction, and the sun has set, then the fasting time to break". (HR. Bukhari 1954). That is, as long as the sun has set the fasting person is allowed to break the fast. Wherever he is, and his fast is considered valid.

How to Break the Air on Time?
Then, what if you have to undergo iftar when you're on a plane? For example, you depart from Jakarta some time before breaking fast, then travel towards the west so you can still see the sun, how is the breaking time?

For this case there are 2 opinions that you can choose according to conditions. The first opinion is intending to complete the fast, which means you will continue fasting until you no longer see the sun around you. This condition automatically makes your fasting time even longer, because in Jakarta the evening call to prayer is already ringing. In accordance with the word of Allah SWT, which is "Then complete fasting until night time." (Surat al-Baqarah: 187)

Other opinions allow you to intend to cancel fasting because you are a traveler. In Islam, nothing makes it difficult and burdensome for its people, especially in worship. If you are on a long journey, you can cancel the fast and then replace the canceled fast with fasting after Ramadan.

Which opinion do you want to choose? There are no provisions. You can choose one of them. If it is still strong then keep fasting until the sun sets, but if it is not strong, then cancel your satisfaction and replace it on another day other than the fasting month.

Is it clear about breaking fast when traveling abroad? Now you don't need to be confused and upset anymore, yes, to carry out this Ramadan worship even though you're on your way!
